Raju to be produced in court.

Posted in news with tags , on January 10, 2009 by cooglie

Disgraced ex-Chairman of Satyam Computers, B Ramalinga Raju, and his brother and former director Rama Raju will be produced before a court on Saturday. The Rajus, who were questioned by the police early this morning after overnight interrogation, would also be questioned by a SEBI team in the Rs 7,000 crore fraud.

SEBI, which served summons to Ramalinga Raju yesterday, is now likely to question him in CID custody. According to Raju’s lawyer, he would appear before SEBI officials at 4 pm on Saturday.

Inspector General (Economic Offences Wing) VSK Kaumudi yesterday told reporters that they would seek police custody of the brothers when they are produced before the court on Saturday. He said they were arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by an investor. Kaumudi said they came to the DGP’S office and they have been arrested in connection with the business of Satyam Computers.

“They are now in CID custody and they will be produced before the court sometime tomorrow,” he said yesterday.

Kaumudi said the interrogation is going on and “we have filed a case against the former chairman (Ramalinga Raju) and the director (Rama Raju)”.

Kaumudi was talking to reporters hours after the two high profile albeit tainted brothers were arrested in connection with the about Rs 7,000 crore financial fraud in the company.

He said a case has been registered against Ramalinga Raju and Rama Raju and others under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating), 406, 467 and 427 (criminal breach of trust, forgery and using forged documents as genuine).

Kaumudi said all the sections under which the FIR has been filed against the two brothers are non-bailable.

Raju brothers have been booked fewer than five Sections that include IPC Section 120B for criminal conspiracy, Section 420 for cheating, Section 468 for forgery, Section 409 for criminal breach of trust and Section 471 for falsification of records.

Meanwhile, Raju was attended by a team of doctors after he complained of uneasiness, his lawyer revealed. A cardiologist from Care Hospital was called to examine Ramalinga Raju after midnight following a request from his lawyer S Bharat Kumar, who claimed that the former Satyam chief was having pain in chest.

In the meantime, a small group of supporters of Raju gathered in front of the DGP office shouting slogans against his arrest. A band of about 25 supporters chanted slogans in Telugu – ‘Raju Zindabad’ and ‘Don’t Arrest Raju’.

Asia marks four years since Indian Ocean tsunami

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on December 26, 2008 by cooglie

MEULABOH, Indonesia : Nations across Asia marked four years since the deadly Indian Ocean tsunami on Friday with prayers and remembrance of one of the world’s worst natural disasters.

Thousands gathered in fields, on beaches and by mass graves to commemorate the disaster that killed around 220,000 people when walls of water smashed into coastal communities across the region.

In Indonesia’s Aceh province, the heaviest-hit region with at least 168,000 killed in the 2004 disaster, thousands gathered in the shattered remains of a military base in the coastal town of Meulaboh for a sombre Islamic prayer ceremony.

“The four-year anniversary of the tsunami holds deep meaning, because right here we witnessed the first place the waters of the tsunami came into Aceh,” local government head Ramli Mansur told the crowd.

“We are here to remember the martyrs who were killed in the tsunami and to give us momentum to rebuild a better Aceh,” he said.

“I came here to remember my beloved mother, my son and my brothers and sisters who were killed in the tsunami,” said Sariani, a teary 20-year-old street seller.

“When the tsunami hit, we were all trapped in the house. My husband, my daughter and I survived while the others were killed because they couldn’t reach the second floor of the building next to our house,” she said.

Around 50 tsunami survivors, left homeless after the disaster, chanted and waved placards after the ceremony demanding housing and accusing authorities of failing to look after victims.

Prayers were held in mosques throughout the staunchly Islamic province, including tearful ceremonies at mass graves in the tsunami-devastated capital of Banda Aceh and along the province’s coastline, local media said.

Indonesia also marked the anniversary with tsunami drills at the northern end of the sprawling island of Sulawesi and on Java island, local media reported.

In Sri Lanka, the country that suffered the second highest death toll from the tsunami, the government asked people to observe two minutes of silence in memory of the victims.

Religious services were held across the island’s coastline for the estimated 31,000 people who perished there in the disaster.

Officials said the government’s newly set up disaster management authority had by Friday commissioned 25 out of 50 tsunami early warning towers planned after the disaster.

In Thailand, where 5,400 people were killed, half of them foreign tourists, hundreds of people gathered along the country’s southwest coast to place wreaths, float lanterns and release sea turtles to commemorate the disaster.

In the tourist hotspot of Phuket, around 1,000 residents and tourists gathered on the main Patong beach, with three other events held elsewhere on the island.

Thousands of candles were to be lit and placed in coconut shells along a three-kilometre (two-mile) stretch of Kamala beach, south of Patong, in a ceremony attended by foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, a provincial official said.

Recovery has been uneven across the countries hit by the tsunami, despite a massive outpouring of billions of dollars in international aid.

In Indonesia, reconstruction has been viewed as a qualified success with 6.7 billion dollars of a pledged 7.2 billion dollars in aid already spent to build nearly 125,000 homes as well as schools, roads and bridges, according to the reconstruction agency, although many survivors still remain without homes.

Concerns also linger of a return to instability when aid dries up in Aceh, which has been at peace since a 2005 deal in the wake of the tsunami brought an end to three decades of fighting between separatist rebels and Jakarta that killed at least 15,000.

Ongoing fighting between Tamil separatists and the government in Sri Lanka has also hampered rebuilding there, with 10,000 people still living in temporary camps. – AFP/ms

Man in Santa suit kills 8 in California

Posted in news with tags , , , , , , , on December 26, 2008 by cooglie

COVINA, California: A man in a Santa Claus outfit opened fire on a Christmas Eve gathering of his in-laws in this Los Angeles suburb and then methodically set their house ablaze, killing at least eight people and injuring several others, the authorities said.

Shortly after the attack, the gunman, identified as Bruce Jeffrey Pardo, 45, killed himself with a single shot to the head at a home in the Sylmar section of Los Angeles, the police said.

In addition to the eight people whose bodies were found in the ashes of the house here, none of whom were identified, at least one other person was thought to be missing, and perhaps as many as three.

Among the total of dead or missing were the couple who owned the home and their daughter, the estranged wife of the gunman, the police said.

Investigators continued to search the charred structure. The frenzied shooting occurred just before midnight Wednesday at the two-story house, set on a cul-de-sac in this middle-class town about 22 miles, or 35 kilometers, east of Los Angeles.

Lieutenant Pat Buchanan of the Covina Police Department said Pardo, armed with one or two handguns and fire accelerant, had gone to the house looking for his former wife, Sylvia, with whom he was finalizing a contentious divorce.People who escaped the house got out by smashing through glass and jumping. One woman broke an ankle when she leapt from a second-floor window.

The house was owned by James and Alicia Ortega, an elderly couple who were retired from their spray-painting business and who often invited their large extended family over for parties, particularly around Christmas.

Relatives said about 25 people, among them many children, were inside the home celebrating when Pardo knocked on the door around 11:30 p.m. He had apparently disguised himself as a hired entertainer for the children in order to gain access.

When a guest opened the door, Buchanan said, Pardo stepped inside the house, drew a semiautomatic handgun and immediately started shooting, beginning with an 8-year-old girl who was hit in the face but who survived, as did an older girl who was shot in the back.

As Pardo unleashed a barrage of gunfire in the living room, relatives hid or fled. Then he sprayed the room with accelerant, and within seconds, the house was ablaze.

Joshua Chavez of Seattle was visiting his mother’s house, which sits behind the Ortegas’, when he heard a loud explosion. “Then I saw black smoke and this large flame,” he said.

Chavez ran out to the backyard and heard three girls, including the one who had been shot in the back, trying to climb over his mother’s wall. “There’s some guy shooting in there,” he said one of the girls told him.

“About 20 seconds after that,” he continued, “the house was totally on fire. One girl said that a guy dressed as Santa started shooting.”

Another neighbor saw three more partygoers fleeing the burning home and shepherded them into another neighbor’s house. The police arrived shortly thereafter, but by that time Pardo apparently was on his way back to Los Angeles.

Solomon Moore reported from Covina, California, and Anahad O’Connor from New York.

BEST LOVE GAMES 4 U

Posted in GAMES with tags , , , , on October 28, 2008 by cooglie

Love games one of the fascinating games played by all the lover around the globe.

These are top 10 love games which the lover prefers .

1. Hide and Seek
Before you chuck this idea out as a stale game, let us tell you that it’s a ‘nude’ hide and seek match that we are proposing! So, make sure your blinds are down before you both decide to do the ‘Full Monty’ or peeping Toms in your neighbourhood may just end up having a field day.
Rules: When the game is intensely naughty, the rules have to be sexier to keep up the tempo. How about something like: “If he finds you, he wins 10 minutes of extreme pleasure.” And in case he fails, he’ll be your love slave for the day and vice versa. Exploit his weakness to the fullest!

2. Bursting balloons
Who said only kids play with balloons? Even adults do! By the end of this balloon game, resisting each other will be simply impossible. Blow up ten (or more) round party balloons. Place them between you and your lover while lying in bed together. Now, both of you start to hug, squeeze and kiss each other, while squashing the balloons in between your bodies resulting in them going pop! The bet is to break as many of them as possible.
Rules: You can’t break the balloons alone by riding on them, but strictly by squashing them between your hot bods.

3. Basketball strip game
Playing basket ball with your partner is a good idea to induce some physical exercise. All you need to do is set up a basketball hoop in your home and start shooting hoops. Doesn’t sound interesting enough? Why not make it titillating by adding a sensuous reward for every shot you get through?

RulesAbandon the usual tracks or shorts and dress formally from head to toe. More the number of clothes…more is the sexual excitement as you view your partner stripping off every last piece of clothing to keep up with your sex drive!

4. Sniff the kiss zone
No G-spot hunting here! Rather, in this game you need five diverse fragrances sprayed on five different spots of your body. Now, let your partner employ his senses to detect those sweet smelling spots and leave his love mark there! Reward? Hmm…what’s better than a sweet smelling kiss or a long lasting hickey?
RulesThe hunter is strictly supposed to do a ‘nose job with no skin touches’ until he/she locates the sweet smelling spot and once it’s done; the other partner simply has to surrender.

5. Nooky numbers
This will only make foreplay even more intense. All you both need is a deck of cards here. Shuffle and place them face-down between you and your partner. Now, take turns to pick out cards from the pile. Follow the rules below and keep playing till you can resist taking the big plunge.
Rules: If you draw a number card, you get to kiss that many spots on your partner’s body.

6. Blind Berry Hunting
In this love hunt, one partner blindfolds the other. Whoever is not blindfolded hides small quantities of
berries (raspberries, blueberries, etc) all over their body and the other has to hunt them out. The reward is that the hunter wins wishes equaling the number of berries he has located.
Rules: The hunter is not allowed to use hands, only mouth-work here. And the other partner has to grant the hunter’s most erotic wishes.

7. Love Pictionary
You must have played Pictionary as a child. We are just making it ‘love pictionary’ for the adults. In this game, one of you makes a sketch of the surprise you want to have at night from your partner. For instance, draw a beach, sand, sun and sea if you want to get dirty on the beach this weekend! And if your partner guesses your clue right…you don’t have to ask for another reward! He too wins a chance to etch out his wildest fantasies! A win-win situation for both!
RulesWhosoever is drawing should not speak and the guessing mate can’t deny actually performing what’s been drawn. What if he fails to guess? He doesn’t get a chance to draw what he wants till he makes the right guess.

8. Ultimate patience test
As the name suggests, in this game both the partners take chances to test each other’s patience. One of them is active, while the other is a passive partner. The passive partner has to lie still, while the active partner takes charge to do just about everything pleasurable to the other. Being active, your motto is to elicit a response from the other, while the latter has to strive to control so as to enjoy maximum gratification.
Rules: It is only when the passive partner reacts (moans or moves) that the doer wins his pleasure trip.

9. Catch an alphabet!
You must have played it in your schooldays. It was something like this – one person started with a city starting with ‘A’ as the other called out a city’s name starting with the alphabet on which the first city ended. Replace the cities with parts of each other’s bodies now! Let him start with a body part starting with ‘A’ and then you take it forward. The tease here is that each one has to kiss the body part being called out. If there’s no body part corresponding to an alphabet, just get creative and name it yourself to keep the passion soaring sky high.
RulesYou can’t skip your turn. Whosoever fails to find a body part loses the golden chance to kiss. As they say one person’s loss is another’s gain – the other partner takes over his chance to get naughty with a particular part of your body. So try and win!

10. Role playing
All of us cherish certain wild fantasies relating to certain professions and professionals. Some love getting spanked by a head mistress, while others just love watching a doctor taking over. If even you have one such naughty fantasy…get into some serious role playing! Dress up the way your partner wants and play act a naughty role just for him/her. How about a wicked schoolgirl getting spanked by a strict teacher or a sexy librarian and student or for that matter a hot detective and his suspect? The possibilities are wild…
Rules: While play-acting, forget your real self. You can only use the props and places suiting the role. For instance, a teacher’s spanking stick or a doctor’s stethoscope checking out never explored places in your body will create quite a ripple.

Rajni’s new face.

Posted in news with tags , , , , , , , , , , on November 4, 2008 by cooglie

rajini

Rajnikanth’s ‘imminent’ entry into politics has been the longest running show in the Tamil political arena, and it has never been clearif the Superstar meant ‘yes’ even when he said ‘no’.
On Monday, the actor, who had faced some heat from his fans for his ambiguous stand on politics, again sent out mixed signals when he said he was “yet to acquire the skill to guide others,” but hastened to add that “if God tells (me) tomorrow, I will.”

Maintaining that no one could force him to take the plunge into politics, Rajni said: “No one wins in politics due to intelligence or talent; it happens only due to favourable circumstances.”

The actor fielded questions from 2,000 representatives of his fans’ association, who had gathered at his Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam in the city. A group of his fans in Coimbatore had floated a party in Rajni’s name, something the actor quickly disowned.

Fans of Rajinikanth have been urging their hero to enter politics for some time now. They even stuck posters and issued statements urging him to take a plunge into politics. They had wanted a meeting with the ’super star’ for a long time now. Eventually the D-day arrived on Monday.

Fans gathered right from the morning to meet the matinee idol. At a dais specially erected at the Kalyana Mandapam, Rajinikanth appeared in a black pyjama kurtha and a huge portrait of Swami Babaji adorned the vicinity.

Fans erupted in cheers and applauded when Rajinikanth said, ‘I would never leave my fans. I will enter politics if it is the wish of Almighty’.

Urging his fans to take care of their families first, Rajinikanth answered a whole range of questions ranging from politics to his films.

On being referred to as a confused man by the media following his recent speeches and acts, Rajinikanth said, ‘If I think what I do is right, I will never hesitate to do it. People may call me a confused man or a selfish human being. Had I not spoken or reacted in such a way under difficult circumstances, our country would have faced much confusion’.

Queried about his apology to Kannadigas in the Hogenakkal issue, a patient Rajinikanth said, ‘it is a cinema affair. Whenever they have any issue with Tamilnadu, they first attack cinema theatres that screen Tamil films in Karnataka. Had I stressed that those denying water to Tamilnadu should be beaten up, the issue would have become very serious. When ‘Kuselan’ got released, it was bound to face troubles. I decided to seek an apology for the safety and betterment of others’.

ATS in UP to quiz ‘right wing’ leader

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on November 12, 2008 by cooglie

Mumbai/Gorakhpur, Nov 11: Maharashtra’s Anti-terrorism Squad(ATS) team on Tuesday headed for Uttar Pradesh to probe an unnamed leader aligned with a “right wing” group in connection with the Malegaon blasts amid speculation the person could be a religious leader from Varanasi or BJP MP Yogi Adityanath.

The ATS kept under wraps the identity of the leader or the place they were visiting, a day after it obtained permission from a Nashik court to quiz what it said a “high profile” leader. Officials of the squad however made it clear that the person was not a high profile political leader but a leader aligned with a “right wing group.”

As the ATS prepared to extend the multi-state probe to cover UP, BJP MP and religious leader Yogi Adityanath accused the Congress of hatching a conspiracy to defame Hindu organisations and dared authorities to arrest him or his followers from his Gorakhpur Parliamentary constituency.

Sadhvi Pragya Singh and Lt Col S P Purohit are among those arrested in connection with the September 29 Malegaon blast and are believed to be the main conspirators.

There were reports that the leader who the ATS wants to probe in UP had meetings with the Sadhvi and the serving army officer. The name of the UP leader emerged during the interrogation of the nine arrested, officials said.

“The ATS is acting under the instructions of the Congress. There is a dangerous conspiracy going on where an attempt is being made to prove that RSS is a terrorist organisation,” Yogi Adityanath alleged in Gorakhpur while charging that the ongoing probe in the Malegaon case is unfair.

The ATS probe in the Malegaon blasts is a “pack of lies and utter rubbish”, he said.

One of the arrested in the Malegaon case, Rakesh Dhawade, who was transferred into the custody of the Aurangabad ATS is also being questioned regarding his alleged involvement in the 2004 Jalna and 2006 Nanded blasts.

Investigators are also probing the possible involvement of arrested army official Lt Col Prasad S Purohit in the two blasts as well.

The ATS is also investigating links between Purohit and persons from right wing groups like Sanatan Sanstha and Hindu Janjagruti Samiti who were arrested for placing crude bombs at two theatres in Thane and Vashi in Navi Mumbai, between May-June this year.

The six, against whom the ATS has filed the chargesheet, are presently in jail for placing the bombs in two theatres which were staging a play which they claimed was offensive to Hindu sentiments.

The ATS will probe possible links between one of the suspects Hemant Chalke, a homeopath and Purohit.

The ATS had taken Purohit to the Bangalore Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for scientific tests like polygraph, brain mapping and narco-analysis to get more leads in the investigation.

Other accused like Sadhvi Pragya Singh Thakur, Sameer Kulkarni and former retired army officials Ramesh Upadhyay had also undergone the tests at the Kalina Forensic Science Laboratory in suburban Santacruz.

Eight of the nine arrested in the Malegaon case are presently in judicial custody till November 17 while Purohit is in police custody till November 15.

Kevin looks for good start against India

Posted in sports with tags , , on November 12, 2008 by cooglie

England skipper Kevin Pietersen (file photo)

After England were defeated at the hands of Mumbai XI in the second practice match, they looked in a state of worry, with few players back on the crease to practise, probably the defeat of 124 has come as a jolt and seems this was a punishment for them.

If we got to believe the skipper this match does not matter to them more as it was just a practice match. “What counts more are the internationals and what happened today does not really count. This really does not matter to us but it has taught us a lesson,” said skipper Kevin Pietersen after the practice match yesterday.

“The boys have played well and we just need to turn our heads and make sure that we make a good start on Friday,”  he said.

The Mumbai XI team is for sure a better team, as they knocked out England brilliantly. Pietersen believes that today’s team was good as compared to the earlier one, that they played last Sunday.

“Today’s match was a learning experience for us and what will happen on Friday is what would count more,” the England said.

Will Friday would be black Friday for the Englishmen, is a question that is being raised after their loss in the second practice match. “India is playing a better cricket and the series against India is going to be tough, he said.

Shourya test-fired successfully

Posted in news with tags , , , , , on November 13, 2008 by cooglie

PERFECT OPERATION: Surface-to-surface missile ‘Shourya’ roars into the sky from the Integrated Test Range at Balasore, Orissa, on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: India on Wednesday successfully test-fired a new surface-to-surface missile called “Shourya” from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Balasore in Orissa.

The two-stage missile took off from a silo at 11.25 a.m. and reached its targeted site 600 km away in the Bay of Bengal. Shourya can carry both nuclear and conventional warheads.

It is the land version of the underwater-launched missile called K-15 (Sagarika), which was fired in February 2008 from an underwater pontoon.

Shourya is a product of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and its Programme Director is A.K. Chakrabarti. M. Natarajan, Scientific Adviser to the Defence Minister, was at Balasore to watch the launch.

‘Significant milestone’

W. Selvamurthy, Chief Controller (R and D), DRDO, said, “Today’s flight-test of Shourya is a significant milestone in building capability for the nation in the field of missiles both for strategic and tactical applications.” Just as the K-15 (Sagarika) missile could rise from the water and knife into the air, Shourya could lift off from a silo on the ground and pierce the sky. “Since the missile is fired from underground, it cannot be detected by conventional satellite imaging,” Dr. Selvamurthy said.

‘Totally new missile’

As Shourya was canisterised it was easy to transport, maintain and operate. Both its stages were powered by solid propellants. The Chief Controller called Shourya “a totally new missile.”

While the K-15 missile has an underwater booster and an air booster, Shourya has a booster underground and an air booster.

Shourya could get through the air defence of an adversary country because it was highly manoeuvrable, Dr. Selvamurthy said.

Defence Minister A.K. Antony has congratulated the DRDO on the successful test-firing of the Shourya.

violence in law college two groups clash

A scene of violence on the college campus on Wednesday. —

CHENNAI: Four students were injured, one of them seriously, when two groups of students clashed on the Dr. Ambedkar Government Law College campus here on Wednesday.

According to police sources, a group armed with deadly weapons, including iron rods and clubs, attacked some students at the main gate in full public view. Police entered the campus after obtaining a complaint from the college Principal. An altercation over printing of a pamphlet to mark the Thevar Jayanthi celebrations on October 30 led to the clash. When some students were coming out of the college after writing the semester examinations at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday, the attack started. For about half an hour, armed youths went on the rampage.

Even as a large number of police personnel were watching from a distance, the students attacked one another. The four third year students were taken to city Government hospitals.

The condition of Arumugham, who suffered a head injury, was said to be critical. He is on life-support system, say doctors. Three students have been arrested.

ADGP (Law and Order) T. Rajendran said a State-wide alert was issued following the incident.

HC directs criminal proceedings against BCCI chief, Pawar

HC directs criminal proceedings against BCCI chief, Pawar
Kolkata/New Delhi: A great Indian drama is unfolding in a Kolkata court and the actors are the most powerful men — now and past — in Indian cricket.

Vicious charges and counter-charges, lengthy court cases, allegations of embezzlement and fraud, of cash-for-votes during many Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) elections, a fight for control of the Rs 1,000-crore Indian cricket board and, that once powerful man’s lone battle to clear his name.

Everyone had written off former Indian cricket supremoJagmohan Dalmiya but on Wednesday the Calcutta High Courtordered criminal proceedings against six BCCI officials for giving false statements under oath and submitting false documents in court to implicate former board president Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Dalmiya had filed a petition alleging that the six officials — Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, N. Srinivasan, Chirayu Amin, Niranjan Shah and Ratnakar Shetty — had perjured themselves.

The court, which took up the case in March this year, agreed with this. Justice Nadira Pathreya even indicated that the false affidavit had been filed to “mislead the court”.

The seriousness with which the court is looking at this matter is also indicated by the court directing its Registrar-General to file a criminal complaint on its own behalf against the six officials with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Kolkata.

The offence, if proved, can lead to seven years in jail.

BCCI officials refused to comment. PTI quoted Pawar as saying he didn’t know what “the exact decision” was. “Just now I am hearing that such a decision is given by the court. So, unless and until I see the papers, consult our lawyers, I will not be able to answer.”

For long, Dalmiya, a former BCCI and International Cricket Council president, has maintained that the current administration has been carrying out a witch-hunt against him, to try and maintain their control over world cricket’s most powerful body without challenge.

After a couple of years in the wilderness following his expulsion, Dalmiya’s came back to power in the Cricket Association of Bengal elections this summer and even attended the BCCI AGM in Mumbai in end-September.

He was apparently asked to (and accepted) a dinner invitation at outgoing Board president Pawar’s home then, leading to some speculation about a thaw in relations. “They basically wanted him to drop the perjury case,” a source close to Dalmiya said, “but he said he had to see this through till the end”.

Yuvraj for Ganguly slot

Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of India’s national selectors, has backed Yuvraj Singh to take the Test middle-order spot vacated by Sourav Ganguly, the former captain who has retired.Kris Srikkanth, the chairman of India’s national selectors, has backed Yuvraj Singh to take the Test middle-order spot vacated by Sourav Ganguly, the former captain who has retired.

Yuvraj made two consecutive match-winning hundreds (138* and 118) against England in the first two ODIs of the seven-match series over the last five days, and also picked up a four-wicket haul in Indore yesterday. Srikkanth told the Kolkata-based Telegraphthat he now sees Yuvraj as the front-runner to take Ganguly’s slot.

“I see Yuvi as a potential match-winner in Tests too. Over the years, he has already shown he’s a match-winner in ODIs,” Srikkanth said. “There are others in the running as well (for Ganguly’s slot), but Yuvi is definitely a front-runner.”

Yuvraj has had an inconsistent run in Test cricket, having played just 23 matches for 1050 runs since his debut five years ago. However, the 26-year-old has been a mainstay for India in one-day cricket having piled up 6397 runs in 219 matches.

While Dilip Vengsarkar, the former India captain and previous chief selector, had recently blamed Yuvraj’s inconsistency at the highest level on a lack of focus, Srikkanth said it had more to do with confidence.

“I’ve never felt Yuvi has a problem focusing on what he’s required to do. I’ve always seen him as a confidence-player and such players need a couple of good knocks under their belt,” Srikkanth said.

Asked about Yuvraj’s latest run of form, Srikkanth said, “He has been brilliant. Rajkot had a batting track, but the Indore wicket was on the slower side and Yuvi had to first hold the innings together. He proved that he can be a match-winner from any situation.”

The Indian selectors will meet on Thursday in Kanpur, after the third ODI between India and England, to select the team for the rest of the series.

Jerry Yang to log out of Yahoo!

Yahoo co-founder, chief Yang to step downSan Francisco: Jerry Yang, who helped kick start the internet revolution as co-founder of web portal Yahoo, is stepping down as the company’s chief executive.

Google, Yahoo call off advertising deal

The announcement by the ailing internet giant came after months of falling revenue, fierce proxy battles and a series of botched negotiations that scuttled what now seems to have been an exceedingly generous buyout offer from Microsoft.

Yahoo said that the search for a successor had already started and that Yang will leave after his replacement is found.

Yahoo, Google revise deal in hopes of approval

“Jerry and the board have had an ongoing dialogue about succession timing, and we all agree that now is the right time to make the transition to a new CEO who can take the company to the next level,” the Yahoo Chairman, Roy Bostock, said in a statement.

Yang took over at the company’s helm last year as Yahoo fell behind web-search powerhouse Google in attracting users and advertisers to its properties. He soon faced fierce criticism for rejecting a $47.5-billion takeover by Microsoft, in a deal that would have valued Yahoo at almost three times what it is worth today.

‘Yahoo, Google may walk away from search deal’

Microsoft’s offer was worth $33 per share, while Yahoo traded at just $10.63 per share at the close of Monday trading.

“Having set Yahoo on a new, more open path, the time is right for me to transition the CEO role and our global talent to a new leader,” Yang said.

“I will continue to focus on global strategy and to do everything I can to help Yahoo realise its full potential and enhance its leading culture of technology and product excellence and innovation,” he said.

had been Miss Meerut in 2005 and also participated in other beauty pageants

Both women were on Monday evening arrested from Meerut’s TP Nagar area and booked for the murder of the elderly couple. The murders were committed on the night of November 10.

According to Meerut SSP Raghubir Lal, “We first thought it was a blind case because it was difficult to imagine that two young and educated women were behind it. It was the past of the girls’ families that gave us clues.”

Police said Priyanka, who had been a beauty queen and had done a fashion designing course after her graduation, was daughter of a retired junior engineer in the power corporation, Prem Singh, 64, and Santosh, 62. The family lived at 48, Prem Prayag Colony.

Prem Singh, according to the police, suspected his wife, Santosh, of having illicit relations with someone and that Priyanka was an illegitimate child

According to Meerut SSP Raghubir Lal, “Priyanka (Miss Meerut 2005) was always badly treated and abused by her family, including an elder brother and sister, who live outside Meerut. Priyanka was the youngest of three children.”

A few years ago, Priyanka met 25-year-old Anju of Amroha, who was herself a much abused child. It is suspected that her father had been murdered by a close relative when she was just a child. And, she had also been abused by some relatives. Her mother, according to the cops, married her off and sent her to live with her maternal grandmother in Meerut where the two girls met.

According to police sources, the bodies of Prem Singh and Santosh were found in their house on November 11. The burly family dog had been tied up on the terrace, leading the police to suspect that some family member could be involved.

Investigations led the police to arrest two women who confessed to the crimes.

citi group say’s it will slash 52,000 jobs

Posted in news with tags , , , , , , , on November 18, 2008 by cooglie

Citi said it intends to reduce the total head count to less than 3,00,000 in the near term as part of the plan. The financial services behemoth had a workforce of 3,52,000 in the third quarter of 2008.

“The head count is expected to be down 20 per cent in the near term from peak levels,” the company said today.

Aiming to have less than 3,00,000 people, Citi would have to cut over 52,000 jobs.

The plans to be discussed in the meeting with Citi staff in New York today are posted as a power point presentation on the company’s website.
The firm, which has been severely battered by the financial crisis, has incurred huge losses in recent quarters. In the third quarter, Citi had a loss of USD 2.8 billion.

In terms of expenses, the financial services major aims to save USD 50 billion to USD 52 billion in 2009.

“Expenses are expected to be down 20 per cent from peak levels,” the firm led by India-born Pandit said.

However, Citi pointed out that underlying business remained strong and that revenues were stable.

At the end of the fourth quarter of 2007, the company’s head count stood at 3,75,000.

In the first three quarters of this year, the company has reduced its workforce by about 23,000 persons.

Earlier today, television channel CNBC in a report on its website, quoting people close to the company, reported that job cuts might go up to as high as 50,000.

“These people say these cuts will occur in a relatively shorter period of time, such as over the next five or six months,” the report noted.data

Solar Plane

JAIPUR: ‘Solarimplse,’ a solar plane, dubbed a revolutionary project in the field of aviation, will have its first test flight April next year in switzerland an officer associated with the project said.
Besides, the microlight-like plane is scheduled to take off for a round-the-world flight in May 2011, project communication head Phil Mundwiller said.

The pollution-free plane would fly with zero fuel on the strength of solarpower both day and night, whose prototype was displayed here as part of the 60th ceremony of India-Switzerland Friendship Treaty.

Phil said two aircraft with the investment of $100m are being designed by a team of 60 engineers. Its commercial production is expected to start by 2011.

There would be a world trip in five legs starting with crossing the US and the Atlantic.

The single-pilot plane is based on innovative techniques in terms of aerodynamics, structure, construction methods and propulsion.

The plane, according to him, aims to demonstrate the “immense potential” ofrenewable energy by flying day and night using no fuel and creating no pollution.

The undersides of the wings are covered with flexible film and the upper surface with a skin of encapsulated solar cells. It has a 61 metre wingspan for improved aerodynamics.

Battle rages for Mumbai hostages

Posted in news with tags , , on November 28, 2008 by cooglie
Fresh explosions and gunfire have been heard at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace hotel, one of several sites targeted in attacks that have killed at least 130.

Indian troops battled with the gunmen for most of the day after swooping on the building at first light.

The bodies of five hostages were found inside a Jewish centre, Israeli diplomats said, after a long battle.

India’s foreign minister said “elements with links to Pakistan” were involved in the attacks.

However, his Pakistani counterpart has urged India not to bring politics into the issue, saying “we should join hands to defeat the enemy”.

Fearful residents say Mumbai will cope

The stand-offs began late on Wednesday when gunmen armed with automatic weapons and grenades opened fire indiscriminately on crowds at a major railway station, the two hotels, the Jewish centre, a hospital and a cafe frequented by foreigners.Earlier, nearly 100 guests and staff – many of them westerners – were rescued from the Oberoi-Trident hotel, and the battle with gunmen there appeared to be at an end.

Around 370 people have been injured since Wednesday, while the death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are discovered.

One security official said eight foreigners were known to have died, among them three Germans, a Japanese, Canadian and Australian.

‘Bodies in hall’

Indian television reported at one stage that the siege at Nariman House, which houses the Jewish outreach group Chabad Lubavitch, had ended, but later reports appeared to contradict this.

An ambulance was seen pulling up at the building and taking one person away. It was not clear if it was a hostage.

Reports then began to emerge that several bodies were found at the site, with hostages thought to be among those killed.

Earlier, commandos had blown up a part of the wall of the flourth floor of the building, having swooped at first light, lowered down onto the roof by ropes from helicopters and dropping smoke bombs to create confusion.Soldiers were said to have been tentatively moving down through the building, trying not to cause casualties among the hostages.

A woman and child has been seen leaving the building, but it was unclear whether they had managed to escape or were released.

The child was identified as the two-year-old son of Rabbi Gavriel Noach Holzberg, the main representative at the ultra-orthodox outreach centre. There was no word on the rabbi’s fate.

Indian security forces have said they believe at least one gunman with “two or more hostages” remains in the Taj Mahal Palace hotel.

Large explosions and gunfire have been ringing out from the building for most of the day after truckloads of commandos entered the hotel. A journalist and bystander outside the hotel were taken to hospital after being hit by shrapnel.

Indian commandos who managed to enter other parts of the Taj Mahal say they found at least 30 bodies in one hall.

The commandos also said the militants were well aware of the layout of the hotel, and that they had recovered a Mauritius identity card as well as guns and money.

FROM THE TODAY PROGRAMME

Earlier, the head of India’s National Security Guard, JK Dutt, said the Oberoi-Trident was “under our control”.

“We have killed two terrorists today,” he said. “There was lots of firing, they also lobbed hand grenades. Some of them are unexploded, we are going to defuse them – you may hear some sound of explosions.”

The relief of the guests was evident as 93 of them were escorted from the hotel on Friday morning following the lengthy siege. They included 20 Air France crew members.

One of those freed, Briton Mark Abell, spoke of his delight at seeing several heavily armed soldiers at his hotel door after spending more than 36 hours in his room.

But he was shocked by the state of the hotel. “The lobby was carnage, blood and guts everywhere. It was very upsetting,” he told the BBC.

Pakistani ‘link’

State home minister RR Patil, speaking out the Oberoi-Trident hotel, said a total of nine militants had been killed, along with 15 police officers and two commandos.

He said one of those arrested was a Pakistani citizen.

BOMB ATTACKS IN INDIA IN 2008
30 October: Explosions kill at least 64 in north-eastern Assam
30 September: Blasts in western India kill at least seven
27 September: Bomb blasts kills one in Delhi
13 September: Five bomb blasts kill 18 in Delhi
26 July: At least 22 small bombs kill 49 in Ahmedabad
25 July: Seven bombs go off in Bangalore killing two people
13 May: Seven bombs hit markets and crowded streets in Jaipur killing 63

Earlier, the Indian navy took control of two Pakistani merchant navy ships and began questioning their crews after witnesses said some of the militants came ashore on small speedboats.

India’s Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee said preliminary evidence “leads us to believe that some elements in Pakistan may be connected to these events”.

But he added that it was too soon to give details.

Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi responded by saying: “This is a collective issue. We are facing a common enemy and we should join hands to defeat the enemy.”

The head of Pakistan’s powerful military intelligence agency, Ahmed Shuja Pasha, is due to travel to India to discuss the situation with his Indian counterparts.

India has complained in the past that attacks on its soil have been carried out by groups based in Pakistan, although relations between the two countries have improved in recent years and Pakistani leaders were swift to condemn the latest attacks.

A claim of responsibility for this week’s attacks – the worst in India’s commercial capital since nearly 200 people were killed in a series of bombings in 2006 – has been made by a previously unknown group calling itself the Deccan Mujahideen.

However, most intelligence officials are keeping an open mind as the attacks have thrown up conflicting clues, BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says.

Broad nails Sehwag early

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on December 19, 2008 by cooglie

A man who set up India’s famous win and occupied the headline space in most newspapers in India after day four of the Chennai Test, was dismissed for a third ball duck.

Stats Dossier: Test matches at PCA Stadium, Mohali

Under overcast skies, Stuart Broad, who was back in the England line-up after missing out the Chennai Test due to a hamstring injury, dished out three beauties – full, outside the off stump and moving away just a tad, enough to beat Sehwag’s bat on two occassions, but just good enough to take a thin outside edge, which was neatly lapped up by wicketkeeper Matt Prior.

India, after winning the toss and opting to bat first, have been pushed on to the backfoot early in the match; they are 6 for 1 after the first two overs.

Rahul Dravid walked out to bat at number three.

0945 Hrs IST: Despite gloomy and overcast conditions which had delayed the start of the opening day of the second Test, Indian captain MS Dhoni won the toss and put the hosts into bat.

It was a brave decision from the Indian captain, given the conditions looked more England-like, with a tinge of green grass on the pitch, and the conditions pretty overcast and more than likely to assist the seam bowlers. While one should concede it was a brave decision, one could also look at it as a confident move from the Indian captain – captain in his opening batsmen Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag to conquer the conditions.

The Indian captain also gave Rahul Dravid, woefully out of form, a confidence booster, when he said he would continue to bat at his usual number three position.

As for England, Kevin PIetersen conceded that he was disappointed at losing the toss, and that he would have batted first had he won the toss.

England have made one change to the team that lost at Chennai; Stuart Broad comes into the team in place of Steve Harmison, who has been dropped after a lacklustre performance in the first Test. That also meant Monty Panesar, whose performance in the Chennai Test came in for severe criticism from several quarters.

Bad light has delayed the start of play by 25 minutes, and given the sun tends to set early in these parts of the world, one is not sure if the scheduled 90 overs for the day will be possible.

Teams:
India: MS Dhoni (captain & wk), Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Yuvraj Singh, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan.

England: Kevin Pietersen (captain), Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook, Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood, Andrew Flintoff, Matthew Prior (wk), Graeme Swann, Stuart Broad, James Anderson, Monty Panesar.
